Cool software for MIDs

The primary focus of the Moblin project is to provide the Linux core stack that is optimized for MIDs and other consumer oriented devices. In addition, we provide an SDK to enable open source developers to create cool applications for Moblin-based MIDs.

To jump start the development community and showcase the key aspects of the Intel MID value proposition (rich Internet and multimedia content in your pocket), the Moblin project provides two core applications: the Moblin web browser and the Moblin media application, and a set of control panel applets.

We are relying on you, the members of the Moblin community, to help us create a set of cool applications that showcase the power of Moblin and the Intel® Atom™ processor technology.

Moblin Applications and Utilities

Here is some information on each of the applications that are part of the Moblin project. Click on the links below if you would like more details or find out how to contribute.

Moblin browser - A full-featured browser is at the heart of delivering an uncompromised Internet experience on mobile and consumer electronics devices. The browser project focuses on extending a Mozilla-based browser core with features such as a simple, finger-driven UI.

Moblin Media - The Moblin media application supports audio and video playback and photo viewing, along with content management through a mobile-optimized interface. Using a simple finger driven UI, users can quickly skim through the media on their device. The Moblin Media application communicates with a D-Bus media service to support popular audio and video codecs using either the Helix* and GStreamer* multimedia frameworks.

Moblin Control Panel applets - The focus of the moblin-applets project is on the creation and maintenance of configuration utilities for the moblin desktop environment. Configuration utilities are pieces of software that provide the ability to change the settings for one or more features of a device. Each supports an independent GUI, usually in the form of a dialog.

Developing Applications for Moblin

Because Moblin uses technology from well known open source projects (X, GTK+, Gstreamer*, Helix*, D-Bus, OpenGL, ALSA, etc), developers can easily adapt existing open source software to the unique UI requirements of MIDs. In many cases, existing Linux/x86 binaries can be used "as is", allowing developers to focus on the unique aspects of MIDs such as a touch based UI, simplified user experience, and extreme portability.

To get started, visit the Moblin SDK.

Specifically, we would love to see developers working on new applications in the following areas:

Location based services: using GPS for determining location, mapping, navigation, linking up to popular mapping services like Google Maps* or Mapquest*

Media content capture and sharing: capturing photos and videos and sharing content on popular web sites like Flickr*, Facebook*, YouTube*, and Picasa*; capturing audio recordings of events like lectures; taking voice notes in a course or meeting and sharing them with others.

Managing your life, staying connected and getting things done: storing your favorite contacts, keeping your busy calendar and "to do" list up to date, updating your blog, chatting with friends over IM, talking using voice over IP (VoIP), accessing your e-mail, communicating via video conferencing, editing and viewing documents in a variety of formats (PDF, OpenOffice, Microsoft Office, etc.)

Staying informed: getting the latest stock quotes, staying on top of messages in your FaceBook, getting the latest scores from your favorite team, watching live TV, staying on top of world news and events.

Keeping yourself entertained: playing games, reading e-books, listening to music or podcasts (local or streaming over the Internet), watching videos or movies.
